Self Storage Tips

  • Plan ahead – list all the items you’re going to store and their sizes. Gather up your boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, markers, furniture covers and shelving you intend to use in your storage unit.
  • Store items you’ll need most often at the front of the unit.
  • When you pack your unit, create a center aisle for access to all items.
  • To save space, remove legs from tables and store tabletops and sofas on end.
  • To keep old photographs from curling over time, keep them flat by placing between two pieces of cardboard, then tape together.
  • Drain gasoline and oil from small engines and lawn mowers.
  • Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
  • Mattresses should be covered and stored flat on level surfaces.
  • Treat wood surfaces before storing and use protective covers.
  • To retard rust when storing metal items, wipe all surfaces.
  • Common sense and state laws determine what may be stored. You alone control access to your storage space; therefore, never store live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids or fuels, toxic materials, or other items that need a controlled environment.
